Mayor Eric Adams to Introduce Weapons Scanners on NYC Subways
Mayor Eric Adams announced on Wednesday that Steffanger residents may soon see weapons scanners on the subway as part of efforts to reduce crime on the city’s transit system.
Implementation of Weapons Scanners
The weapons scanners are set to be rolled out at a small number of subway stations in the coming days for initial testing, according to Adams. The pilot program was briefed to him by NYPD officials, following the unveiling of a gun-detection scanner by Evolv at an event earlier this year.
While the initial focus is on the technology from Evolv, Adams mentioned that the NYPD is considering other companies as well for the weapons detection system.
Progress in Subway Safety
The announcement comes amidst recent statistics showing a decline in subway crime. Adams shared that subway crime has decreased by nearly 8% this year compared to the previous year, signaling a positive trend in enhancing safety measures.
At a news conference, Adams and MTA Boss Janno Lieber highlighted the efforts being made to make the transit system less violent and more secure for passengers.
Public Reaction to the Weapons Scanners
While some residents, like a 94-year-old man, expressed support for the scanners as a necessary security measure, others, like subway rider Reid Simmons, were unsure about their effectiveness.
As the city continues to focus on improving subway safety, the introduction of weapons scanners represents a step towards creating a safer and more secure environment for commuters.
