American Woman Found Chained to Tree in Indian Forest
A frail-looking American woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was found chained to a tree in a dense forest in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district. She claimed that her husband had left her there to die without food for 40 days.
Rescue and Medical Treatment
Kayi was discovered by a shepherd who heard her cries for help and reported the incident to the authorities. She was then taken to Goa Medical College for specialized treatment, where she was found to be severely dehydrated and too weak to speak.
Despite her condition, Kayi managed to write a note in English stating that she had been in the forest without food for 40 days. Authorities also found medicines to treat mental health problems in her possession.
Investigation and Background
Police launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on the possible attempted murder of Kayi by her estranged husband. The woman, who held a U.S. passport and visa, had been living in India for ten years and was previously residing in Tamil Nadu with her husband.
Authorities are still verifying the details provided by Kayi in her note, including her claim that she was locked up by her ex-husband. Due to her frail health, she has not been able to provide a formal statement to the police.
According to Amol Chavan, an inspector involved in Kayi’s rescue, she had been trapped in the forest for at least 48 hours before being found. The police had to cut down the tree and break the locks to free her.
The investigation is ongoing, as officials work to piece together the events leading up to Kayi’s ordeal in the forest.
