Legal Battle Over Con Sofrito Club in Bronx
Con Sofrito, a Bronx club popular with New York politicians, is embroiled in a legal dispute with its landlord, facing potential eviction for hosting illegal events. The recent ruling by a judge has put the club in immediate danger of being forced to shut down due to violating a court order.
Controversial Events at Con Sofrito
In a series of events held at Con Sofrito, including a party last month, the club has found itself in hot water. City Sheriff Anthony Miranda and Mayor Adams’ nightlife advisor Jeffrey Garcia were among the attendees at one of these events, which a judge has deemed illegal, as reported by the Daily News.
The club, owned by Richard Caban, brother of NYC Police Commissioner Edward Caban, was ordered to permanently close by August 31 for operating an illegally constructed “party room”. Despite a court settlement reached in February, the club continued to use the space, leading to further legal complications.
Legal Battles and Eviction Threat
Landlord Joseph Dedona claimed that after tearing down the original party room, Con Sofrito replaced it with other illegal structures in the parking lot. This led to a court ruling against the club, allowing immediate eviction. While the club already faces an August 31 deadline to vacate, an additional 14-day eviction notice is set to be served.
In a separate filing, Dedona argued that the club violated the settlement agreement by not demolishing the party room by the specified deadline, potentially leading to criminal and civil contempt charges.
High-Profile Attendees and Ongoing Legal Woes
Notable figures such as City Sheriff Anthony Miranda and former Bronx congresswoman Marjorie Velazquez attended the controversial events at Con Sofrito. Despite claims of temporary and movable structures, the legal battle continues for the club’s owners, including Richard Caban.
As the eviction case and contempt claim unfold in court, the future of Con Sofrito remains uncertain, with potential sanctions looming over the club’s operations.
