The Deadly Riots in Minnesota: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’s Inaction
In the summer of 2020, Minneapolis and St. Paul were rocked by deadly riots following the murder of George Floyd. Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz were criticized for their cheerleading and inaction during this tumultuous time, which resulted in communities being burned and hundreds of businesses looted and destroyed.
The Lack of Government Support and Rising Crime Rates
As the city descended into chaos, the crime rates soared, with murders increasing by 75% in 2020 compared to the previous year. Many small businesses, like Barbara Vee’s office, were destroyed in the riots, leaving owners struggling to recover without sufficient government support.
"People expect more and bigger help from the government. This is a disaster, and when a disaster happens, people expect help from the city, state, or federal government," said a Minneapolis dentist, Dr. Ali Barbarawi.
Failure to Act: Tim Walz’s Delay in Sending National Guard
As the unrest escalated, Minnesota Mayor Jacob Frey urgently requested at least 600 National Guard personnel to control the situation. However, it took Governor Walz a full 18 hours to mobilize the Minnesota National Guard. When they finally arrived, residents reported that they did little to stop the violence.
Ricardo Hernandez, the owner of La Michoacana Purepecha ice cream shop, pleaded with the National Guard to intervene as rioters threatened his business. Despite his pleas, the National Guard did not act promptly, leading Hernandez to take matters into his own hands to protect his livelihood.
Controversies and Fallout
Governor Walz faced criticism for reportedly sharing confidential information with his teenage daughter, affecting law enforcement plans and National Guard response times. Additionally, Vice President Harris’ social media post encouraging donations to the Minnesota Freedom Fund drew scrutiny, as the fund reportedly bailed out violent criminals.
The lack of consequences for these dangerous criminals has contributed to a rise in crime rates, leaving communities feeling unsafe. The Minneapolis Freedom Fund’s actions have been condemned by Rep. Mary Franson, who introduced legislation to limit their ability to bail out criminal suspects.
As a result of the George Floyd riots, crime rates in the Twin Cities have skyrocketed, and public safety has been compromised. Tim Walz and Kamala Harris’ handling of the situation has been called into question, and the impact of their actions – or lack thereof – continues to be felt in Minnesota.
