Lead-contaminated Cinnamon Products Prompt FDA Recall
Federal health authorities are once again cautioning consumers to check their spice racks for cinnamon products that may be contaminated with lead. Recent testing has revealed elevated levels of the metal in several brands, prompting recalls and public health alerts from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Health Risks of Lead Exposure
The FDA warns that while short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not immediately cause symptoms, prolonged exposure can lead to serious health issues. Children may experience learning disabilities and developmental defects, while adults may suffer from kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects as a result of chronic lead exposure.
Recalled Products
Several brands of cinnamon powder have been recalled due to potential lead contamination. American Spice Inc. is recalling its Spice Class brand cinnamon powder packaged in 7-ounce and 12-ounce plastic jars with an expiration date of December 12, 2026. Advance Food International and ALB-USA Enterprises have also issued recalls for their respective cinnamon products.
Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled products immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the respective companies for more information.
Public Health Alerts and Warnings
In addition to the recalls, the FDA has issued a public health alert for El Servidor brand cinnamon powder due to elevated levels of lead. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and recommends that distributors voluntarily recall the affected products.
In March, a similar alert was issued for six other cinnamon powder products found to contain high levels of lead. These actions come in the wake of a nationwide recall of lead-tainted applesauce, highlighting the importance of food safety and regulatory oversight.
As federal health authorities work to address these concerns, it is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and stay informed about product recalls and alerts related to potential food contaminants. By taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of our food supply, we can protect the health and well-being of individuals and families across the country.
