Stellantis Recalls Over 330,000 Vehicles Due to Faulty Seat Belt Sensors
U.S. auto safety regulators are looking into complaints regarding some Ram pickup trucks and Jeep Wagoneer SUVs potentially losing power, entering park gear, and activating emergency braking systems. This investigation, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, specifically focuses on approximately 150,000 2022 models produced by Stellantis. These vehicles are equipped with the company’s 5.7-liter Hemi e-Torque mild-hybrid system, which enables the vehicle to generate its own power.
According to the agency, the system is designed to convert energy captured during braking into power for various electrical components, utilizing a 48-volt battery pack and motor-generator to assist with powering the crankshaft during gear changes.
The Potential Issues
However, the agency has received 80 complaints from vehicle owners indicating that the engine may unexpectedly shut down, particularly at lower speeds, with some instances leading to difficulties restarting the engine. As a result, investigators will delve into identifying the affected models, the frequency of these issues, and the underlying reasons behind the engine stalls. NHTSA may ultimately recommend a recall based on their findings.
Stellantis’s Response
Stellantis has stated that they are fully cooperating with the investigation and encourage any vehicle owners experiencing symptoms to contact their dealership promptly for assessment and potential resolution of the issue. In a related note, NHTSA previously issued a recall for about 131,000 Ram pickup trucks and Wagoneers last April that were also equipped with the same system. Initially, the power loss was attributed to excess fuel in the air-gasoline mixture, but recent reports suggest that electrical malfunctions might be the cause of the engine stalling incidents.
Conclusion
It is crucial for vehicle owners to stay informed about potential safety concerns and address any reported issues promptly to ensure the continued safety and functionality of their vehicles. Stellantis’s proactive approach in working with regulators demonstrates a commitment to resolving these issues and prioritizing customer safety.
