Understanding the Recent Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats
Recently, there has been a widespread recall of Boar’s Head deli meat products, as federal officials are concerned about a potential link to a deadly listeria outbreak in the United States. The initial recall has been expanded to include an additional 3,500 tons of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products sold under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brands.
Recall Details and Concerns
The recall, which covers a total of 71 products produced between May 10 and July 29, has raised concerns after a liverwurst sample collected from a Baltimore-area store tested positive for the same USDA strain responsible for the outbreak. As of the latest data, the listeria outbreak has sickened at least 34 people, with two reported deaths.
Recalled Products and Locations
Some of the recalled products include Virginia ham, olive bread, various types of ham, bologna, bacon, and other deli meats. These products have been shipped across the country and even exported to other countries like Mexico, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. If you have any of the recalled products, make sure to check for the establishment number “EST.12612” or “P-12612” within the USDA mark of inspection on the label.
Symptoms and Precautions
Symptoms of listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. According to the CDC, listeria infection can lead to severe complications and even harm unborn babies. To prevent contamination, be sure to clean your refrigerator thoroughly if you have stored any deli meats in it.
