Warning: Malicious Google Chrome Extension Targeting Solana Users
Jupiter, the decentralized exchange on Solana, has issued a warning about a malicious browser extension targeting Solana users using Google Chrome. According to a detailed analysis by the platform’s founder, nicknamed “Meow,” the browser extension is designed to drain user funds and even bypass Solana’s impersonation checks.
Extension Description and Risk to Solana Users
The extension, called “Bull checker,” is being promoted on Solana-related forums as a tool to view holders of a specific meme coin. However, this seemingly innocent extension can intercept and modify transactions, maliciously transferring user funds to different wallets. The extension also evades detection by trading simulation tools, hijacking the wallet’s signTransaction method to drain funds.
Meow warned that the extension requires read and write permissions, which is a major red flag as Bull checker functionality should only need read-only access. Users are advised to uninstall any suspicious extensions with similar permissions immediately to prevent fund drainage.
Cryptocurrency Cybersecurity Threats
This incident is not an isolated one, with malicious browser extensions targeting cryptocurrency users in various ways. From fake extensions mimicking popular wallet apps like Ledger Live to collecting cookies and targeting specific exchanges like Binance, attackers constantly evolve their tactics to deceive victims.
It is crucial for cryptocurrency users to stay vigilant, avoid installing suspicious extensions, and regularly update their security measures to protect their funds from cyber threats in the ever-changing landscape of digital assets.
